Addiction, Intoxicants, and the Humoral Body

Abstract Taking the humoral body as its spatial focus, this article considers how medical writers and practitioners engaged with ‘intoxicants’ both in terms of prescription medicines conceptualization compulsive consumption – or what is often styled by modern ‘addiction’. Focusing first instance on compilers vernacular pharmacopoeia compilations ingredients techniques argues that just sugar, tobacco, especially opiates had a significant possibly transformative role everyday physic, so ‘operation’ opiates, distilled spirits, tobacco was crucial stimulating new thinking about bodies became substance-dependent. The also argues, however, that, order to conceptualize problem, turned venerable language custom rather than relatively addiction particular, ancient idea ‘second nature’.
